【English】FRAUD

Recently, I felt a pang of sorrow upon reading a report by the Nikkei Chinese Edition.

In 2025, the total losses from Japan's ‘specialised fraud’ and ‘social media-based scams’ reached ¥324.1 billion, 1.6 times the previous year's figure, with both categories reportedly hitting record highs. Investment scams and romance scams on social media alone accounted for ¥182.7 billion of this total. What should be noted is that this is not solely a problem for one nation. According to reports, approximately 300,000 people are involved in fraudulent activities in the Southeast Asian region around the Mekong River, described as ‘the most powerful criminal network of modern times’. Fraud has transformed from acts carried out by small groups into a major underground industry featuring division of labour, established bases, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). I believe this is not merely criminal behaviour, but an act that erodes social trust.

Japan once held the reputation of being a nation with good public order and a safe society. Is that image now becoming a thing of the past? What we can do now is keep our eyes wide open, listen carefully, and think critically! If something feels off, contact the fraud prevention hotline.
